The skamania are coming in and aptly enough Skamania Mania is on for this weekend at Michigan City, Ind.
The photo is Jacob Gurney, the 2014 winner with his 13-pound, 12-ounce steelhead.
Here are the basics from Mike McKee and some tangential comments related to the arrival of steelhead, albeit a bit later than most years:
Steelhead catches have been fair to good around Michigan City the last couple of weeks - 10 to 30 Skamania coming off pier most mornings, although its shoulder-to-shoulder fishing at daybreak, steelies are scattered throughout Trail Creek (water clarity ideal at moment) where the veteran guys are hooking two to four per trip and for trollers, a few steelhead were caught in and around breakwall last weekend, more were taken in 60 feet of water where coho catches were OK and just as many were being caught in lake trout land over depths of 100 to 150'.
Of course, any of the silver beauties are a prize to catch. The free, no preregistration required Skamania Mania starts at 12:01 a.m. on Sat. (yes, there are anglers out at midnight) and goes through 3 p.m. on Sun. First place gets $200 Cabelas card, 13th wins $200 rod/reel, in between is swaggering rights and $25 Cabelas cards.
