Ice fishing begins: For brave or foolhardy
Ice fishing begins around the northern edges of the Chicago area for the brave or the daring, depending how you like your ice fishing.
They started getting out Friday on a few spots on the Chain O'Lakes yesterday, said staff at Triangle Sports and Marine in Antioch.
Among those being fished are the T Channel, a few channels on East Loon and some channels on Twin. Even in those spots, it is only 2-3 inches.
Across the line in southern Wisconsin, Brian Gates at Geneva Lake Bait & Tackle said 40 guys were out on the Stoughton Ditches on Friday, but he said he only heard of one fish caught. Four guys fished the boat launch area on Delevan yesterday and one guy was out on the west end; he expects more out there today. A few fish are being caught by the boat launch on Turtle; and guys are out on the east end and south shore of Como.
Obviously, as the photo above shows, a big problem for ice formation is geese movements and as the photo below shows, ice if very variable and often open water is nearby.
