Long run to Navy Pier: Hoosier Coho Classic
I thought I was reading this wrong, but indeed the pro winners --Dave Baker on Flat Out--of the Hoosier Coho Classic did make the run from Michigan City, Ind. to Navy Pier off downtown Chicago.
Here is the word from Mike McKee:
A little untimely on this, but Classic Pro Division and $10,000 top prize was won fishing at NAVY PIER in CHICAGO!
Dave Baker and crew aboard Flat Out, a 58' Donzi which can run 50 mph, fished inside the Chicago breakwall for limit catches on Sat and Sun. It was a risky move, as there is only six hours of fishing/run time each day, but underscores how poor fishing was around Michigan City last weekend (other than lake trout, only three of which are allowed in 10-fish daily limit).
A feeble six limit catches were recorded by the 66 entrants in the two day contest - and all came from Navy Pier. On Sunday, four other Pro boats followed Flat Out to Chicago and all caught limits and all finished in the Pro top five.
Am division winner was John Messina (Nail Bender Too) from Glenview, Ill., who won a $2,500 Simrad electronics unit plus $1,000.
24U winner was Steve Qualizza of Valparaiso, Ind., winning $1,200.
