Wild times: Weekend stuff

By Dale Bowman

It's another one of those packed weekends if you are looking for inside stuff to do before open-water returns.

The big return of open-water fishing begins with the reopening of Braidwood Lake to fishing on Sunday.

My plans are to walk the shoreline on the south side of Braidwood at opening 6 a.m. Sunday, then head north to cover the men's finals of Beat the Champions for the Sun-Times at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb.

However, all those plans may be thrown for a loop if we get a significant snow or storm.

Storm or no storm, I expect to make my first open-water casts of 2015 on Sunday at Braidwood.

Braidwood, in southwest Will County, opens at 6 a.m. and closes at sunset. Click here for site info. If launching a boat, have something along for traction as the launch.

My Wednesday column for the Sun-Times was on prospects for Braidwood. Blue catfish and largemouth bass look the most promising.

But there are other things going, too this week.

  • For years, I have meant to make Our World-Underwater, which runs through Sunday at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. I don't think I am making it this year either. But it always looks like a very cool show.

  • The Northern Illinois Boat Show runs through Sunday at the Lake County Fair Grounds in Grayslake. You can take public, as in Metra.

  • There will be free salmon and trout seminars at Lake Michigan Angler in Winthrop Harbor on Saturday. Doors open at 8 a.m. and seminars begin at 9 a.m. Call (224) 789-7627.

  • The 22nd annual auction for DRiFT (DuPage River Fly Tyers) is Saturday. The preview is at 11 a.m.; auction at noon.

  • The Dick Cole Memorial Breakfast is Sunday at the Plano American Legion. It is the big fundraiser for Quad County Hawg Hunters chapter of Muskies Inc. If my timing works, I may take the back way to DeKalb and do the breakfast.

And remember, one of the last 10-days outdoors shows--the Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show--runs through Sunday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
