Perch: Pieces of the past
Ken ``The Lakefront Lip'' Schneider knows something about fishing for yellow perch.
He has the unofficial, but verified record for heaviest perch caught off Chicago.
That is why the whole thing with the world record recognized by the International Game Fish Association bothers him.
That is a 4 pound, 4 ounce perch caught by Dr. Charles Abbott in 1865 in New Jersey.
A lot of us just are bugged that a fish like that would stand as the world record. Improbable is being polite.
Well, The Lip did some digging and saw that the New Jersey record was something different than the world record.
Click here to look at the listed New Jersey freshwater fish, which includes a much more likely record yellow perch of 2 pounds, 6 ounces, caught in 1989 by Gene Engels from Holiday Lake in New Jersey.
At the bottom, I saw that the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife figured out a cool way to handle a dubious record:
