Canada geese raised such a racket of honking on the south shore of the north old clay pit that I knew I  would find goslings between at least one pair.

I knew something was up when the big gander did not give way, until Lady and I were about 10 feet away. He held guard at the bridge over the neckdown between the two old clay pits with the certain steadfastness of a Royal Guard.

The big surprise this morning was hearing, then finding a bittern, up in a tree of all places, near the south old old clay pit. It is hard to miss the rather distinctive call of a  bittern.
